If you've done hundreds of side crunches and Russian twists and your love handles haven't moved, you're not doing anything wrong — you're doing the wrong thing. You can't burn fat from one spot by working the muscle underneath it. Love handles go away the same way all body fat does: a consistent calorie deficit, strength training to keep your muscle, and enough time for your body to reach that area. The good news: that's a plan you can actually follow, and it works for everyone.
To get rid of love handles, lose overall body fat: eat in a moderate calorie deficit (about 300-500 kcal below maintenance), eat roughly 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight, and strength train 3-4 times a week. Ab and oblique exercises strengthen your core but don't burn the fat on top. Love handles are often one of the last places fat leaves, so expect weeks to months, not days.
This isn't just gym wisdom — it's been tested. In a 2011 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, people who did abdominal exercises 5 days a week for 6 weeks got stronger abs but lost no more belly fat than people who didn't do them (Vispute et al., 2011). Another study had people train only one leg for 12 weeks: they lost fat, but from the upper body — not from the leg they trained (Ramírez-Campillo et al., 2013).
Your body decides where it takes fat from, mostly based on genetics and hormones. For many men — and plenty of women — the sides and lower belly are the last stores to go. Reddit says it bluntly: "Targeted fat loss is a myth. Just lose more weight. Increase protein, increase workout intensity, lower calories." (r/workout, "Targeting fat in love handles?")
The most frustrating part is that love handles often stay after everything else changes. One Reddit user who went from 70 kg to 60 kg still asked how to lose them "for good" — a classic sign that there's just a bit more fat to lose, or that muscle needs to be built so the waist looks tighter. The consensus answer in the 60+ comment thread "How to lose the love handles??" is the same: "To lose your love handles you just need to maintain a calorie deficit (burn more than you consume each day) and over time you'll burn your fat..."
Other common reasons they stick around:
Aim for about 300-500 kcal below your maintenance. That's roughly 0.5-1 lb (0.25-0.5 kg) of fat loss per week — slow enough to keep your muscle, fast enough to see changes in the mirror every month. Bigger deficits feel faster but usually end in a rebound.
Around 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day is the level where research shows the biggest benefit for keeping and building muscle (Morton et al., 2018, British Journal of Sports Medicine). In practice: 25-40 g of protein at each meal.
Lifting doesn't burn the love handles directly, but it changes your shape: a stronger back and shoulders make your waist look narrower, and muscle keeps your metabolism up while you diet. Focus on compound lifts: squats, deadlifts or hip hinges, rows, presses and pull-ups.
Planks, side planks, Pallof presses and carries are worth doing for a strong, stable core. Just don't expect them to melt the fat on top.
8,000-10,000 steps a day adds a few hundred calories of burn without making you hungrier the way hard cardio can.
It depends on how much fat you have to lose overall. As a rough guide from coaching: if you're only "a bit soft" around the sides, 8-12 weeks of consistent deficit and lifting usually makes a visible difference. If you have 20+ pounds to lose, plan for several months — and expect your love handles to be among the last things to change. Take progress photos every two weeks; the mirror changes before the scale feels like it does.
Everything above is simple to understand and hard to do consistently — which is exactly why most people never lose their love handles. PonteFuerteAI turns it into a plan you can follow:
Not with targeted exercises alone. Studies show ab and oblique work doesn't reduce the fat in that area. Love handles go away with overall fat loss from a calorie deficit, plus strength training to keep your muscle.
If you're only slightly soft around the sides, 8-12 weeks of a consistent deficit and lifting usually shows a visible change. With more weight to lose, it can take several months, since love handles are often one of the last areas to lean out.
Where your body stores and releases fat is largely determined by genetics and hormones. For many people, especially men, the sides and lower belly are among the last fat stores to shrink.
Any diet that keeps you in a moderate calorie deficit with high protein works. Build meals around lean protein and vegetables, keep processed snacks and liquid calories low, and track for a few weeks so you know your deficit is real.
